Just doodling postcards

As you may realize I normally always work from photos that I have taken. Paintings start as a pencil sketch, that is then worked in with watercolour or oil over the course of hours (sometimes quite a few hours).   I’m still feeling off and haven’t been able find the concentration I needed to paint.

So I decided to give myself a break, just an afternoon of pure doodling! No photo, no need for anything remotely like perfection,  no self judgement,  just playing around ^_^

rough sketch of goby

Finally starting to add some inhabitants to our new salt water tank at home. This guy is diamond goby. To be honest its been a long week at work and my brush work is pretty sloppy today, but at least he still looks cute ^_^

another fish

So I confess this recent fish craze has been spurred on by the purchase of a salt water fish tank setup! This is my first time trying to have saltwater fish and I am terribly excited about it. Right now though it simply is home to some rocks, algae and bristle worms as I am waiting for the water to cycle ^_^

Lionfish

Based on a photo from visiting the Georgia Aquarium back in 2019.  Really enjoyed how it felt like this guy just emerged from the paper today ^_^

A little play

This is a pretty small sketch, I hurt my hand earlier in the week somewhat limiting what I was up for today. This betta does like to rest on the lily pad leaves in his tank. I mainly like how couple of the lily pad leaves turned out, otherwise a little rough over all ^_^

Finishing up

Went back and finished up last weeks hummingbird. This was been a little heavy from the get go, but I’m happier with end product than I thought I would be.  Just have to keep practicing!

work in progress

Struggling with this little guy today, was initially planning on adding more to the image, but taking a break for now since his feathers just weren’t coming out right. Sometime things just don’t go as well as I would like ^_^

Spring pollinators

Our parry penstemon has plenty of blooms to share this year. This was combined from two separate photos of the same plant.

feeling like spring

Due to Covid, the Tucson Botanical Gardens is closed right now. Normally I would going to visit their beautiful iris garden! This was done from a photo I took there last year. The whole composition is a little on the “cute” side with the bee’s, but with the spring weather today I just wanted to do something light ^_^
